“I’m originally out from Picayune, Mississippi, which is 72 miles up the road.

I finished high school and I came here because it was the nearest large city and it was also near my parents – they were older when I was born – so I could easily get to them.

My theory is that living here requires tolerance. You live next to your neighbor, glued together sometimes, and you might as well like your neighbor, because sooner or later you’re going to have to get into his property to get to yours.

Anderson Cooper walked up to us when we were sitting on the stoop – we didn’t leave during the hurricane. There were 12 of us and we stayed 6 or 7 days, and then there was a mandatory evacuation.

These buildings have been here over 200 years. This is alluvial soil next to the river and it doesn’t flood. The river deposited solid long before Bienville got here and it’s just a nice high place.

I love this place.”
